Govinda Sah, also known as Azad, is a prominent Nepali artist and cartoonist born in 1974 in Rajbiraj, Nepal. He is celebrated for his artistic journey that reflects resilience and a deep commitment to promoting peace through art.
Background and Early Life
Ethnicity: Govinda is of Madhesi ethnicity, which informs much of his artistic perspective and social commentary.
Artistic Inclination: From a young age, he showed a strong inclination towards drawing and sculpture. Despite facing challenges due to his family's financial situation and societal perceptions of art as a viable career, he persevered in pursuing his passion.
Artistic Journey
Initial Struggles: After winning a district-level art competition in 1988, he faced opposition from his family regarding his artistic aspirations. In search of livelihood, he moved to India in 1991, where he worked as a signboard and wall painter.
Education: In 1995, he returned to Nepal to study at the Fine Art College. His dedication led to his first solo exhibition in 1999, earning him recognition as “Lion Heart” from prominent artist Prof. Govinda Dongol.
Advocacy for Peace
Nationwide Cycle Tour: During the Maoist insurgency in Nepal, Azad embarked on a nationwide cycle tour in March 2000 titled The 21st Century is the Century of Art and Peace. This initiative aimed to promote peace through art by conducting workshops and exhibitions across the country.
Artistic Themes: His work often explores themes of spirituality and environmental consciousness. He uses clouds as a metaphor for human desires and the powerful forces of nature.
International Pursuits
Further Education: After completing his Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Tribhuvan University, he pursued a Master's degree at the University of Development Alternative in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He later moved to London for an MFA at Wimbledon College of Art.
Exhibitions: Govinda Sah has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally. His works have been showcased at prestigious venues such as the October Gallery in London and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Recent Works
In September 2024, his artworks were featured in an exhibition titled Vital Force at the October Gallery, showcasing his unique approach that blends Eastern metaphysical insights with contemporary Western science.
