Ragini Upadhyay Grela, commonly known as Ragini Upadhyay, is a prominent Nepalese artist, lyricist, and philanthropist. Born on November 9, 1959, she has made significant contributions to the field of fine arts in Nepal and is recognized for her unique fusion of traditional mythology, symbolism, and modernism in her surrealist and abstract paintings.
Background and Education
Ragini spent much of her childhood in Bettiah, India, where she attended a Catholic school at a time when educational opportunities for girls in Nepal were limited. She pursued her formal education in the arts at the Crosthwaite Girls College in Allahabad and later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Lucknow College of Arts and Crafts in 1982. Despite facing familial disapproval, she continued her studies in printmaking at Gadhi Art Village in New Delhi and furthered her training at the Oxford Printmakers Co-operative in the UK.
Artistic Career
Ragini's artistic journey began with her first exhibition in 1978, which garnered attention from notable figures such as Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala. She gained prominence with subsequent exhibitions, including one inaugurated by Queen Aishwarya Shah in 1986. Over the years, she has held more than 65 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions across various countries.
Her work often features archetypal motifs from Hindu mythology, such as Kali, Kumari, and other spiritual symbols. These motifs are presented through a surreal lens that reflects both personal experiences and broader social commentary. Ragini's art frequently addresses themes of feminism and matriarchy, using her platform to raise awareness about women's rights and gender issues.
Recent Exhibitions
In March 2023, Ragini Upadhyay held a major retrospective exhibition titled "A Retrospective of an Artist" at the Nepal Art Council. This exhibition showcased 239 pieces created over her 45-year career, including paintings, prints, drawings, and lithographs. The retrospective provided insights into her artistic evolution and the experiences that shaped her work.
Philanthropy
Beyond her artistic endeavors, Ragini is also known for her philanthropic work. She founded the Shivata Love Foundation in memory of her daughter, Shivata Upadhayay Grela, who passed away from meningitis B. The foundation focuses on raising awareness about the meningitis B vaccine and promoting education for underprivileged girls in Nepal through scholarships.
Impact
Ragini Upadhyay is regarded as one of Nepal's leading contemporary artists. Her ability to blend traditional elements with modern themes has not only elevated her status within the art community but also contributed to the global recognition of Nepali art. Through her work and advocacy, she continues to inspire future generations of artists while addressing critical social issues.
